Spinning Tree Theatre proudly presents the world premiere play Rubik by Vanessa Severo.
Rubik is a story about Tomas and a group of young people with an array of developmental challenges standing on the cusp of the next phase of their lives. This heart-felt story follows them as they encounter love, fear, stress, excitement, change and hope, along the path to human connection.
Spinning Tree Theatre's world premiere production of Rubik is funded in part by generous support from The National Endowment for the Arts and Children's Theatre Foundation of America.
Rubik is produced in partnership with Camp Encourage, whose mission is to provide youth on the autism spectrum meaningful experiences in which they build the knowledge, courage, and skills to be empowered participants in the community.
Sensory kits at Rubik performances are provided by Variety the Children's Charity of Greater Kansas City.

"A couple days ago, it might have been a Wednesday, I was driving my daughter to piano practice. She was looking out the window of the car and said, 'Mom, I just realized that the people walking on the street, or going into the stores, are the main characters in their own story, and we are just other people to them.' I loved this awareness. The knowing that we all are going through life with our own challenges, our own narrative, and our own journey. In Rubik, I wanted to crack open the lens and peer into a day in the life of someone else. Someone else going through changes, and navigating their world, and being a superhero in their own way. I didn’t want a resolve at the end. I didn’t want to tie it up with a bow, because the reality of life is that we tackle hurdles. Once we’ve cleared them, we continue going full speed, and see another in the distance. Reality is, that we will jump again. And again. And again. We leap, clear, and land, and some of the people driving by in their cars -might notice." - Vanessa Severo
"Theater, at its core, is all about Connection and Collaboration, Education and Evolution. So is life, as it turns out. I believe that theater has the power and the responsibility to demonstrate and inspire us to reach for those qualities more eagerly in life. To do so efficiently, however, it needs to speak to us in a voice we recognize, and come from a person we can easily associate ourselves with. I am so honored and humbled to work on a project that I believe does just that. From the brilliant mind of my all time favorite artist and collaborator, Vanessa Severo, "Rubik" celebrates and showcases with heart and humor how much better life can be when we strive to connect, learn, adapt, and grow from one another. It is a gift to do that work with incredible guidance and support from selfless organizations like Spinning Tree Theatre and Camp Encourage. It is far too rare that we find ourselves in a scenario where we are doing a job that we love and that also feels important and beneficial to the world around us. This is one of those scenarios. I am blessed to Collaborate and Connect with all the amazing individuals that have dedicated themselves and their unique gifts to presenting this world premiere production. I have been Educated and have Evolved because of these extraordinary individuals, and this beautiful play." - Rusty Sneary
